No Matter the Effort, the Pain Shall Pass

When you need to do something very difficult, neither the effort, nor the short term pain should be counted in; no matter if we are talking about physical or psychological pain, the end result is what matters most. If we are talking about a new project or setting a new personal jogging or beer drinking record – it’s quite usual to have a hard time at the beginning.

Let’s imagine that you decided to start jogging or running the marathons and begin, like any normal person, to train. On the first day you start with a break, it’s only natural to start by preparing your gear. Then, setting into motion – if you do this for the first time or after a long sedentary period – everything may seem to go smoothly at first. You feel like flying and that nothing can stand in your way, you nearly see yourself putting on an arrogant smile at the finish line. But… after a few minutes only, you realize that you are not in such as a good shape like you imagined and your legs, joints and all  start hurting.

You look back and realize that you only set off from the start and begin to wonder if this was the best idea. If you choose to do this at the gym, it gets even more frustrating; you feel as if the damn clock is not working, kilometer display looks broken – you are jogging your ass off and the screen seems to suffer from a slow motion syndrome.

If you live to see the end of the first training day, not everything will seem so difficult – you achieved what you have initially set out to do, even if you needed to ask for some extra oxygen doses on the way. It was a hard day, you did your best and feel tired, very tired.

The next day, your alarm clock goes off. You try to snooze it, but you don’t understand why your body doesn’t respond to the usual commands. After several attempts, you get to sit on your behind on one side of the bed, hoping it was all a nightmare and you’ll soon wake up – pain free.

Another 3 minutes go by and you are up on your two feet without clinging to anyone/anything.  Still, you feel like some sort of drunken baby, swaying on his/her feet, trying to stand and laughing along. You also laugh, but it’s not a heartfelt laugh. You have no clue on what to do next: lean on your back and sleep for a couple of weeks to recover or continue exercising in excruciating pain. You are not even drunk, like last week when you tried to put on your seat belt while sitting on the toilet.

You nearly pass that moment when you are not sure if you were the recipient of a hammer massage on every inch of your body – and decide to continue.

There will be several other moments, hours, days, painful weeks during which you ask everyone if this is normal and you become more confident.

It’s pretty much the same at work when you start a new job or get to lead a new team. Not necessarily involving physical pain, which was not included in the job description; not necessarily being accompanied by men and women you can trust and rely on.

After a while, you realize that during all this time of pain, both physical and psychological, the effort was not in vain and that the end result is what really matters.

You don’t abandon when feeling a little pain, not at the first sneeze, the first wet fart or the first callus.

You clench your teeth and move on.

If it matters to you… If not, you are merely a loser who cracks at the first sign of pain, just like the next guy. It’s easier this way.
